Launched in the fall of 2005, the Rhode Island ICU Collaborative is a partnership between the Rhode Island Quality Institute, Quality Partners of Rhode Island, the Hospital Association of Rhode Island, the state’s eleven acute care hospitals, Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island, UnitedHealthcare and Neighborhood Health Plan of Rhode Island.
The Collaborative aims to improve patient safety and clinical outcomes for adult intensive care unit (ICU) patients in the state through the development of a unit-based patient safety program and the implementation of proven evidenced-based practices, leading to a reduction in ICU length of stay, complications and associated costs.
Rhode Island is the only state in the nation to achieve 100 percent hospital and adult intensive care unit participation in such a project and has succeeded in maintaining this participation for more than five years. The Collaborative’s work positively impacts care provided to patients in all 263 adult ICU beds in Rhode Island – more than 16,000 patients each year.
Participating ICU teams will work to implement and evaluate proven strategies that address these issues.
